On this day - November 13 - Romans held a festival honouring the goddess Feronia, a goddess of woods and spring flowers. Feronia held a temple in Terracina, forty seven miles from Rome, at whose altar slaves could seek sanctuary. Inscriptions imply that slaves were freed here.
